Sit Down and Eat!

Sounds simple, right? WRONG! When you have a busy body toddler or your hands that wants to see, be, and do everything at once it is a fight to get him to sit at the table and eat his meal in one shot! Our kitchen is really a galley kitchen that we've forced into being an eat in kitchen but sometimes the space can get cramped and then we'll just eat in the bedroom where he at least has his own table but he'll take two bites then he's off again to play with something or look at something.

The Mr's way is the ultimate guy way of, 'Sit down and eat!' hasn't really worked without tears and food flying. I've tried the 'sit in mommy's lap' method but then that feels like too much coddling. What will he do when it's time for pre-k? Ugh, figuring things like this out make question whether or not keeping him at home for this long was a good move but I am seriously protective and don't really care for the idea of him being somewhere without him being able to tell me what happened during his day. Call me crazy or over the top but that's just what it is ::shrug::

We're working on it, How do you get your kids to be still and eat? Is it even possible at this age (20mo.)?

No, it's not really possible for them to sit for a long period time but what I found out that works for Moo is we got her own chair and we let her eat the coffee table. It's the perfect height and makes her feel like she has her own little table. She doesn't sit thru the entire meal but she sits for at least 10 to 15 minutes of it.

They don't sit for a long period what I do is maybe put the food in front of them and let them feed themselves that will be a mess though so scratch that. He will sit down as time goes on

I do whatever works that day. At daycare, Pookah sits at a table and eats. I guess it's the crowd mentality. But at home...LAWD! He will sit and eat, but once he's done, he's done. And I'll admit to feeding him breakfast while he's sitting on my lap. it's our little morning routine that started when he used to steal bites of my breakfast.

It's a challenge at that age. My boys were the same way. The best advice I can give you is the same as what I usually say about kid's haircuts--distraction is the best way to keep kids still. If he has a toy at the table to play with between bites, he might not leave the table to go play with a different toy.

It's so different for each kid! Our oldest just can't sit down at a meal. I don't know why, but she's almost 8 and she just can't sit and eat. Doesn't help that she's not much of a big eater. Our youngest, on the other hand, can sit for an hour at the dinner table and chow-down. So, sooner or later, they will learn to sit and eat (I hope!). Glad to know that I'm not alone!
